Pace and NYIT Split a Softball Doubleheader
Alex Pandolfi
April 9, Briarcliff- Pace would end up shut out 5-0 in the opening game against the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). The Setters would get their revenge in the second match up as they got the 4-1 victory against the Bears.
In the losing opening game, pitcher Kiryl Shada went the distance by pitching the complete game for the Setters. Shada gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out three in the start.
In the visiting dugout, Nina Cesare pitched a complete game shutout for NYIT. Cesare gave up three hits and struck out eight in all seven innings.
Freshman Marissa Brucculeri was the offensive star for the Bears by getting three hits in three at bats and driving in three of the team's five runs.
Shada, along with junior Patti Hurley and sophomore Amanda Dague, collectively got all of Pace's three hits.
Even though the Setters gave up five runs, Shada did a great job of holding off the Bears' hitting. Despite coming close to scoring a few times, Shada kept NYIT shut out for the game's first four innings.
With the game scoreless in the fifth inning, senior Katelyn Thomas would break the silence by legging out a triple. Brucculeri would hit a single that brought Thomas and the game's first run home.
After advancing to third off of a sacrifice hit, Brucculeri would score from a sacrifice infield hit by junior Annel Sanchez.
Leading by 2-0 going into the sixth, the Bears looked to break this game wide open. With two outs, junior Brilynn Fields doubled and the next batter, sophomore Lisa Boystak would draw a walk.
Thomas would then double for her second hit of the game and would drive in Fields, giving the Bears a 3-0 lead with runners on second and third.
Brucculeri would then single and bring both Boystak and Thomas home to give NYIT a 5-0 lead.
While the opening game looked grim for the Setters, they were looking to make that a completely different story in the second match up.
Pitcher Alicia Parlon was given the starting nod in the game two. Parlon pitched four solid innings, only giving up one run on three hits on her way to her second win of the season.
Freshman Jackie Enlund would be getting the start for the Bears in the second game. Enlund would pitch three and a third innings, giving up two runs, one unearned, on five hits.
Pace made up for the lack of offense in the first game by scoring a run in the first inning of the second game.
Junior Christina Pane sparked the Setters offense with a double. Hurley batting next would get to first on an error, which also advanced Pane to third.
During the next at bat Pane would attempt to steal home plate. Hurley would advance to second on the throw, but Pane was caught stealing at home.
Hurley would then advance to third on a sacrifice hit, and single by junior Trish Allutto would give the Setters an early 1-0 lead.
The action would quiet down until the top of the third inning. Junior Lia Lara would hit a single and would eventually advance to second on a sacrifice hit.
A double by junior Lauren Sabia would bring Lara home to tie the game at one.
In the bottom of the fourth the Setters looked to break the tie. Sophomore Kerri McLean led off the inning by drawing a walk. McLean would eventually advance to third on two passed ball pitches.
Senior DJ Ketchel would break the tie by hitting a single and bringing McLean home.
In the sixth inning the Setters looked to pad their lead. Freshman Sarah Meleney reached base on a fielder's choice. Dague would proceed to double and bring in Meleney, giving the Setters a 3-1 lead.
Pane would cap off the game with her second double of the game brining in Dague, the fourth and final run for the Setters.
After this non conference match up, the Setters remain at .500 with an 11-11 record.
The Bears bring their record to 20-9 after playing the Setters.
The next home game for the Setters will be on April 24 at 3:30 p.m. against conference opponent Merrimack in Briarcliff.
