April 9, Pleasantville- It was a pitching duel between Pace and conference rival Bentley as neither team could get a run across home plate for seven innings after the seventh inning.

In the fifteenth inning, with one out, senior Jack Cawley smacked a double down the right field line to get himself on base.

With Junior Denis Alimonti batting next, Cawley wanted to get himself in better scoring position. Cawley did just that by stealing third base.

Alimonti would fail to bring Cawley home as he struck out soon after.

Junior Joe Cotone was one swing away from getting the win for the Setters with two outs in the bottom of the fifteenth. Cotone, with a swing of the bat, lined the ball to right centerfield off of Bentley sophomore pitcher Matt Boudrow, bringing home the game winning run, giving the Setters a 3-2 win over the Falcons.

The victory improves Pace's record to 19-10 overall and 9-1 in the Northeast-10 (NE-10) conference.

Bentley falls to 10-19 overall and 5-9 in NE-10 conference play with the loss.

Despite the loss, Bentley pitcher Brett Fistes put in ten innings of work and only gave up two runs on three hits, with one of the runs being unearned. Fistes also struck out five batters.

Junior Zach Dayton also had a great pitching performance for the Setters. Dayton struck out five batters in seven innings. He also only gave up two runs, one of them unearned on six hits.

Cotone was the primary offensive producer for Pace by driving in two runs on two hits and scoring a run himself.

Cawley also performed well at the plate by scoring two runs and getting three hits in six at bats.

The Falcons offense came from sophomores Joe Door and Jason Cusumano who had one run batted in (RBI) apiece.

Bentley was the first school to get on the scoreboard in this epic match up, when sophomore Garrett Stenhouse legged out a triple with no outs in the second inning.

Dorr drove in Stenhouse, the game's first run, by hitting a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield, giving Bentley a 1-0 lead in the second.

The Falcons were able to pad their lead a little bit in the third inning. Sophomore Brett Damato would get to first base after a throwing error by Pace third baseman Aaron Zrenda.

After an attempted sacrifice bunt by Ricardo Sullivan and a second throwing error this time by the Setters catcher Chris Brown, Damato would run all the way to third base.

With Damato on third and Sullivan on first, Cusumano would drive in Damato after a sacrifice infield hit, making the score 2-0 Bentley.

Bentley would gain a few more opportunities in the fourth and the sixth inning to score, but failed to do so.

Fistes had Pace scoreless and only gave up one hit until the seventh inning.

Cawley would hit a single into center, and some nervous movement by Fistes caused a balk that moved Cawley to second.

Cawley advanced to third after a sacrifice hit by senior Neil Ross. Cotone would bring Cawley home after ripping a triple to right and the Setters trimmed Bentley's lead down to one.

Zrenda almost ended the inning by hitting the ball to the shortstop Dorr, who made a throwing error that brought the game tying run home.

With the game tied at two, the Setters took out Dayton and relied on their relief pitching to finish the job.

Sophomores Frank Luongo and MacKenzie King would both pitch four innings each to bring the Setters to victory.

Luongo gave up one hit and struck out three in his four innings pitched, while King struck out seven, giving up no hits during his time on the mound.

King would be the winning pitcher in the game, making his record 2-1. Relief pitcher Boudrow would take the loss for Bentley, falling to 0-4 on the season.

The next Setters baseball home game is on April 16, at 3:30 p.m. against conference rival Franklin Pierce.
