Pace University or Pace High School?
Melissa Gandarinho
It is that time again: registration. As students prepare themselves to take new courses that they either need or for fun, ratemyprofessor.com is what they look up to. Yes, word of the mouth from other students is the best way to find out if a certain professor is worth taking, but so is knowing who to listen to.
When students start looking at ratemyprofessor.com and see that their professor is either not there or that the professor is ranked badly, the student automatically cancels out that class. It is with good reasoning. What we as students do not realize is that sometimes some students rate other professors badly because they feel they were graded unfairly.
In reality, the professors that we should be on the look out for when taking a class are those that do not teach like a professor should teach, but professors that find themselves teaching like a high school teacher. When a professor teaches, it is not about doing your work and handing it in on time, it is about what you learn from doing that work. Unfortunately here at Pace, this is not how it goes for some professors.
Since the students are paying 40 grand a year, one would think that professors would be more lenient with attendance. Professors here are strict and state that if a student has more than two absences, it causes failure of the class. This is unfair for those students who do the work, do extremely well on their midterms and finals, and then have to suffer the consequences of not going to class to learn something that they obviously have knowledge of.
That is problem number one, and I know there is a fair amount of students who agree with me when I say that professors need to realize that we are paying for education and it is our decision if we should attend class or not.
Do you remember the rumors about how some teachers used to hit their students with rulers for discipline? At college there is no discipline, right? It is understandable that some professors feel the need to tell a student to either turn their cell phone off, or not text during class, but to remove a student from the class room because of looking at their cell phone is just out of control. I know this sounds ridiculous and there was no way this could have happened, but it has.
Some professors are treating the students like they are in high school all over again. From calling their name out when they are doing something wrong, to removing a hat. Since when did college become so strict? And is this fair?
We as college students do not need to be treated this way. When we signed up for college we knew that it would be nothing like high school and yet some professors are treating their students like little kids.
These professors will remain anonymous, but if you ask me, I would get all the information on certain professors before taking their class. The money that we are paying at this school should be enough to cancel out absences and allow us to wear hats to class. If that is not allowed, what makes this a college and not just another four years of high school?

If students want to be treated like adults, they need to act like them, and that includes not texting or listening to music or taking a phone call during class. (Continued…)

The article does not state that the students are disrespecting the professor, nor the professor is disrespecting the student. This article simply states that some professors treat some students like little kids. (Continued…)

I'm a Pace student and I have to disagree with the position taken by the author of this article. I'm an adult career changer and find myself in many classes with students significantly younger than me. (Continued…)
