Alex Pandolfi
April 2, Pleasantville- In a non-conference match up against Molloy College, Pace journeyed its way to a dominating 13-7 win. The win is Pace's fourth in their past five games.
Sophomore James Hammel helped carry the Setters to victory, by scoring a game high four goals on six shots. Junior T.J. Urban totaled a game high of five assists from the bench in the winning effort.
The Lions were led by junior Keith Galante, who scored two goals along with an assist. Junior Mike Salisbury scored a goal and a team high of three assists.
Pace looked to gain momentum early as they launched four shots within a two minute span. The fifth time was a charm in this case, as senior Justin Page shot in the first goal of the game, giving the Setters a 1-0 lead.
In the next five minutes, sophomore Jake Sheppard punched in two goals, extending Pace's lead to 3-0.
Senior Ben Volen assisted Sheppard on his second goal, and scored a goal of his own with one minute remaining in the first quarter, giving the Setters a 4-0 advantage. This goal gave the first of Urban's five assists.
Pace continued what it started in the second quarter by extending their lead to 5-0 within the first minute after Hammel scored his first of four goals.
Molloy almost got on the scoreboard after a shot was made Galante. Unfortunately for the Lions, after the officials looked at his equipment they found an illegal pocket in Galante's stick, forcing the goal to be taken away and a one minute penalty.
With six minutes remaining in second quarter, Molloy finally got on the scoreboard after a goal by Salisbury.
A goal by junior Jeffery Flandina, with a little over one minute left in the first half, shortened Molloy's deficit to 5-2 at half.
Molloy came out in the firing in the third quarter looking to take the lead. After an illegal equipment penalty for Pace, Galante scored a goal for the Lions, utilizing the one man advantage, within 20 seconds of the third quarter's start.
With the lead trimmed down to 5-3 and the Setters still down a man, senior Brian Tempone cut the lead even further by scoring a goal for Molloy, making the score 5-4.
A five goal lead now a one goal lead, surprised the Setters. Just when it looked like Molloy was going to pose a comeback, Hammel wrapped in a goal, bumping the Setters lead to 6-4.
Just like that, the momentum was back on the Setters' side. That momentum carried throughout the rest of the third quarter while the Setters added three more goals to their score, bringing the score to 9-4 at the end of the third quarter.
Pace continued to pour on the goals in the fourth quarter by scoring two goal in the first four minutes, giving the Setters an 11-4 lead.
The Lions would take advantage of another extra man opportunity when Galante punched in his second goal of the game for his team, making the score 11-5.
Despite time winding down, Molloy still had the will to win. Freshman Chris Oswald shrunk the deficit a tad by bringing the score to 11-6.
Pace would put the game out of reach after another two goals by Hammel would give the Setters a strong 13-6 lead.
Molloy would tag on one final goal with a little over a minute left, giving the final 13-7 score.
The victory improves the Setters record to 5-3 overall, while their Northeast-10 (NE-10) conference remains at 1-1.
With the loss, Molloy falls to 4-5 overall and extends their losing streak to five games.
The next home game for the Setters takes place on April 9 at 4 p.m. at Pace Field against NE-10 conference opponent American International.
