The Pros of Artificial Insemination
DIANDRA GARCIA
I was both delighted and moved by Dr. Marie Werner's letter concerning my former article on the "cons" of artificial insemination. It is only fair to follow-up on all the beneficial points artificial insemination can raise. So this one is for you, Dr. Werner.
Human artificial insemination is a revolutionary procedure with numerous benefits. Not only can the artificial insemination technique create an avenue to pregnancy for couples faced with male or female infertility, but it is more commonly used for single women and lesbian couples who wish to have a family.
In my last article I mentioned that one should be aware that some procedures are done with anonymous sperm donors, which may cause problems down the line. However, not all sperm donors are exclusively in the domain of anonmyous sperm banks. It is absolutely possible to use sperm familiar to the woman, with her consent of course.
Additionally, all donors are screened and tested prior to insemination, reducing the likelihood of passing a genetic disorder to the child. There is no doubt that modern scientific technology opens bigger and better options for longer, healthier lives for the future.
There are many positive testimonials that are worth examining. Here is a true story concerning artificial insemination that I thought was very fascinating:
Throughout his life, Chris, the only child of a single mom, has only known his father by one name…#46. Growing up, he felt loved and was always told, "You are a love child and gift from heaven."
Stacy, another only donor child raised by a single woman, lived 30 miles away, also very taken care of. Stacy also grew up knowing that her biological father was chosen from the sperm bank.
However, when she was finally 18-years-old, her curiosity about her biological father grew stronger. So she logged onto the Donor Sibling Registry to search for more information, and to her surprise, she discovered Chris.
She immediately guessed they were related since they looked so much alike. And, sure enough, their mothers both went to the same fertility clinic, with the same donor in common (#46).
After three months of constant emailing, Chris and Stacy finally reunited. Further research revealed that both siblings had both lived in Paris during college and were fluent in French.
