This one is simple-your funny bone is not a bone at all!

It is actually a nerve, the ulnar nerve to be more specific, that extends located along the inside part of the elbow and extends into the hand. It helps control some movement of the hand. The nerve sends signals to the brain about the feelings in the fourth and fifth finger.

Usually nerves are protected by deep muscles so dull pain is not felt if hit. However, the ulnar nerve is only protected by a thin layer of skin in the back of the elbow. So when it is hit, "painful electrical impulses [are] discharged from the nerve."

Where did the word 'funny' come from? Here are two theories.

First, the ulnar nerve runs along the humerus bone, which extends from the elbow to the shoulder. Second, it is thought that the word funny does not mean to laugh but instead refers to the funny feeling the nerve produces when hit.
