Five Cult YouTube Videos of the 2007-2008 School Year

5) LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!!
In September, Britney Spears' performance at the 2007 Video Music Awards shocked the nation. And so did the hysterical, tear-filled rant by an effeminate and over-emotional Tennessean named Chris Crocker. Perhaps the most bizarre part of the two-part diatribe, in which he blames the mainstream media and celebrity dirt columnists/paparazzi who only care about "readers and making money off of her," is when Crocker refers to he and Britney as being "both beautiful women!" Oh, and of course the kicker - screaming "LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!!! SHE'S A HUMAN!!!" at the top of his lungs.
4) I Got A Crush...On Obama
It was in June, 2007, that model Amber Lee Ettinger, now forever immortalized as "Obama Girl," professed her infatuation with the Democratic presidential hopeful in her sultry, lip-synched music video. Ettinger, whose closest previous brush with fame was being crowned "Miss NYC" of the 2003 Miss Hawaiian Tropic Pageant, later followed up with a second video entitled "Hillary, Stop the Attacks! Love, Obama Girl." But contrary to her lyrics of love, Ettinger could, in fact, leave Obama alone, and did; she didn't vote for him in this year's primary. (Tease...) Obama Girl did, however, get a spread in Maxim magazine and had her video spoofed on an episode of Saturday Night Live.
3) Dramatic Look
You'll find this critter called a gopher, chipmunk, hamster, and about three other types of vermin - but truth be known, it's actually a prairie dog. (I guess "Dramatic Look Prairie Dog" just didn't have as good of a ring to it!) I really don't know what to say about this one, other than that if you ever doubted that Americans have way too much free time on their hands, the number of hits on this one says it all. At a whopping five seconds, it is also the shortest video on our list.
2) Shoes
"OMG, shoes!" Over 14 million have sat through the obscene, four-minute music video about drag/drama queen Kelly's obsession with footwear. The brainchild of comedian Liam Sullivan, star of the VH1 series I Hate My 30s, the video snagged a 2008 People's Choice award for the new "User-Generated Video" category. Sullivan, who plays Kelly and multiple other characters in the video, has since created subsequent sequels including "Txt Message Break Up" and "Let Me Borrow That Top." If you haven't seen it, do it fast before someone "betch slaps the dumb out of you!"
1) Chocolate Rain
Good luck ever getting this one out of your head. It's been barely a year since Tay Zonday-- a 25-year-old Minnesota grad student who looks about 15, yet has a voice deeper than Darth Vader -- awkwardly belted out what may well be the most successful song ever comprised entirely of chorus, yet the hits keep rolling in! 17 plus million to date, and with Zonday's continuous rounds on the talk show circuit, there are sure to be many more. From its spastic beginning to the odd "I move away from the mic to breathe in" thing, this bizarre classic has more than earned its spot as No. 1 on our list -- and an eternal place in the realm of internet infamy.
Honorable Mention: Star Wars Kid
Although totally two years ago, it would be pure blasphemy to write this article and exclude the legend which is Star Wars Kid. The 2002 footage, filmed in a high school A/V room and "leaked" by his classmates, features an awkward and rather rotund teen breaking it down Skywalker style with what is apparently a golf ball retriever. Six years since the cult uber-geek phenomena first made waves on the internet, the footage continues to be the basis for new YouTube user edits, not to mention receiving countless pop culture references. One user response, entitled "Drunken Jedi," has the kid wielding a double-ended light saber and dodging lasers. Sure the teen's parents filed a lawsuit over the whole thing, but hard time have, you must, believing anyone called "Star Wars Kid" didn't get a thrill out of watching himself fighting a superimposed Yoda!
