Letter to the Editor
Ms. Garcia's article on artificial insemination raised some interesting points. However, it would be instructive for her to consider the possibility of families using artificial insemination of carefully screened fertilized eggs to effectively eliminate genetic mutations that predispose or condemn an individual to a life of disability or early, painful death. Artificial insemination is not exclusively in the domain of (anonymous) donor sperm banks.
I have had cancer twice. I carry a genetic mutation which carries a 90% risk of certain types of cancers in women by middle age. I do not want to pass this on to my children or my children's children. If we use our scientific knowledge wisely we may open up options for healthier children, longer lives and far more optimistic prognoses than ever before.
Perhaps an article on artificial insemination should also include the "pros".
Respectfully,
Dr. Marie Werner
