Do You Have what it Takes to Make a Difference?
MICHELLE CALLENDER
This week begins the kick-off of "Best Week Ever-Wellness Week," which has been presented to all students by Pace University, the Counseling Center, Office of Housing, and Residential Life. The events taking place begun on Mar. 3, and will end on Friday, Mar. 8.
During this week, Resident Assistants (RA's) will hold events that are geared towards making students more aware of taking care of their own mental and physical health. Furthermore, events will be held during the day on the New York City (NYC) Campus.
A recent event held earlier this week was a stress management workshop. This event showed attendees how to relax and meditate in the Qi Gong traditional way.
Qi Gong is a Chinese relaxation with Qi meaning that there is an energy or life that passes through everything in the world, whereas Gong means accomplishment. This tradition helps preserve mental health as it allows individuals to clear their minds and unite with their spirit.
In addition to this program, the Counseling Center held an event on Mar 3 called "A Shot at Love, Sex, and Dating." This event focused on individuals discussing their relationship concerns in an open forum.
On Tue, Mar. 4 two events were held. Predictably, one event assessed the well being of students' mental health. The Counseling Center was able to make this assessment possible by performing free stress tests, as well as mental health check-ups, and tips for an all around healthy way of living.
Furthermore, a very serious topic was discussed-suicide and prevention methods. According to Pace University's website, suicide is the "third leading cause of death in college students." This presentation focused on the Pace Community specifically and was given and made by the Director of the Counseling Center on the NYC campus. Included within the presentation was information about the "emotional aspects, community effects, and prevention of suicide."
Today, Mar. 5, the program titled 'I Love NY: International Students Coming to America' will begin at 12:20 PM in the Multipurpose Room. This program is fun-filled, involving games and discussions about the experiences of international students coming to America. This program is a first-hand learning opportunity for students eager to learn about cultural variances and why other cultures travel to the US for their education.
Soon after at 3:30 PM, the event 'Lesbians, Gays, Transgendered Persons, and Queer Folks (LGBTQ) 'Flavor of Love: From in the closet to out and proud' will be held. At this event, individuals will be able to share their experiences with "coming out of the closet, dealing with everyday stressors or discrimination…" This event is open to all students.
To conclude the day, a self-defense class based on Russian martial arts will take place. This safety defense course will be taught by trained professionals and will teach individuals how to gain control of sticky situations by applying minimum force to the attacker. For instance, students will learn how to escape grabs, chokes, make surprise attacks with numerous opponents, and more. To take advantage of this meeting that can potentially save a life, meet at the Media Room at 7:00 PM.
Two events are scheduled for Thursday Mar. 6, both taking place in the Student Union. First at 10:00 AM, an event focused on discussing the difficulties of all relationships, including romantic and friendly ones will take place. Discussions will concentrate on how the digital world, such as internet sites like Facebook and MySpace put strains on these relationships. Through discussions, ways of avoiding these online communication issues will be presented.
Next, a program on self-love called 'Program Runway-I Love My Body: Fashion Show' will be occurring. In addition to self-love and displaying love for one's body, individuals will have the opportunity to show all that are attending love of their culture.
All of the mentioned events will provide either prize giveaways, food, or both. Most importantly, the events will provide individuals with the opportunity to make a difference, whether it is improving mental health or opening up to the differences of others. Learning about different cultures and different issues individuals face is a start towards making a difference in the future that is to come.
