Did you ever stop and think about why you applied to college in the first place? Some may have actually thought about this question, and others may have just dismissed it and went with the flow.

When I was in High School, I remember that everyone was applying to college, whether it was a CUNY, SUNY or a private four year. If you did not have any interest in applying to an institution of higher education, you were seen as deviant; could this be why the majority of High School graduates are currently enrolled in colleges around the United States?

For me, I wanted to go to college because it was an opportunity that many people do not have. My parents are immigrants from Guyana, and not everyone had the opportunity to attend college. My grandmother had ten children and only two of them were able to attend college while two others went to a trade school. After my parents had two children in Guyana, they were forced to move to the United States to get proper medical care for one of my brothers.

My father went from a manager at one of the largest sugar corporations in Guyana to a bread factory worker in New York over a period of only a few months. He struggled in many ways to get to where he is now, and he taught all of his children a work ethic that we would be unable to find elsewhere. This is the reason I went to college, because I know that I need to struggle and actively strive to achieve what I want.

It is important to realize that we need to take advantage of every opportunity that we have, especially here at Pace. We have a great advantage over many other universities in the sense that we have a relaxing Westchester campus, as well as a New York City campus that is well affiliated with the Wall Street area.

Last semester, I went to an event hosted by co-op to orient Pace students with their services. Although it was highly advertised, only two students showed up. These are events that students need to attend. Co-op and career services has an e-recruiting website that allows students to access employers who a hiring for a variety of jobs, ranging from a summer internship to a part time job.

If you want to begin your search, there are many resources you can go to. Regarding clubs and organizations relating to your major, you can always speak to your advisor or professors. In regards to career services, you can contact them (914) 773-3415 or (914) 773-3361 or visit them online through the Pace under student services. Most importantly, do not forget to attend the career fair on Thursday, April 3rd!
