The women's basketball team for Pace University united on Saturday by wearing pink shoelaces, wristbands, and other accessories for breast cancer awareness month during their game against the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College.
Not only was unity shown through Pace's attire, but it was also shown with their play on the court as the Setters emerged victorious with a 70-59 win over the Purple Knights.
Pace's senior guard Stephanie Klingele totaled a team high of 16 points in the game, with ten of the 16 points coming in the game's final half.
Sophomore forward Taylor Losey led the Setters with four rebounds and also scored 13 points and stole the ball three times.
For the Purple Knights, sophomore forward Michelle Otey led Saint Michael's in points with a game high of 18.
Prior to the game, there was a special presentation for Klingele, who broke Pace's all-time three point record on Feb. 2. During this time, Pace's assistant coaches and head coach Carrie Seymour presented Klingele with a special basketball commemorating the occasion.
Once the game started, the Setters came out ready to play by going on a 5-0 run to begin the game. The shutout was broken when Otey sunk in a lay-up making the score 5-2.
After a three point shot from freshman forward Kristen Connolly, the Setters extended their lead by six points, but the lengthy lead was short lived.
As the clock kept ticking, the Purple Knights were determined to shorten their deficit. After another basket sunk by Otey, Saint Michaels trimmed their deficit down to one with the score now being 12-11.
Just as Saint Michaels was about to take the lead, a 6-0 run by the Setters, which included two free throws by Losey, gave Pace an 18-11 lead.
Once again, the Setters were looking confident with their comfortable lead, and once again it was short lived, as the Purple Knights clawed their way back to a shortened deficit. With eight minutes left in the opening half, freshman forward Logan Pintka made a shot that cut Pace's lead down to 22-20.
For the remainder of the first half the Setters went on an 18-6 run that broke the game wide open with the score 40-26 at halftime. During the run, six of the 18 points scored by the Setters were made by senior guard Christine Fitzgerald.
Pace came out in the second half looking to continue what they started in the opening half. Within the first three minutes of the final half, a shot by Losey put the Setters up by 20 points.
The Setters continued to maintain their dominant lead, and as the Purple Knights tried to comeback, the Setters put them right back in their place, eventually extending their lead to 63-39 about midway through the second half.
For the next five minutes, Saint Michael's went on an 18-5 run and it was looking like the Purple Knights still had a chance to catch up for the win with 2:57 left in the game and the score being 68-57.
Saint Michael's could not rise to the occasion, even though the Setters kept turning over the ball, and the Setters were eventually able to let the clock expire for the victory.
With the win, Pace improves their overall record to 9-15 and their Northeast-10 conference (NE-10) record to 8-11. The Setters also have won four out of their last five games.
Conference rival Saint Michael's falls to 13-11 overall and 9-10 in the NE-10.
The next time the Setters are playing in Pleasantville will be on Feb. 23 when Pace plays at 1:30 p.m. against conference opponent Le Moyne
