Watch the star in the new movie, Atonement

Since Keira Knightley has started her acting career, she has received fame and accolades that many others her age haven't.

A large part of her success comes from her first credited movie role that is currently one of the top 20 best box office hits of all time: The Pirates of the Caribbean. In that movie, she starred alongside Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, causing her career to skyrocket upward.

Due to the movie's immediate success, it gained one of her previous movies, Bend it Like Beckham, another look. It was previously a cult classic, but is now a world renowned smash, bringing in profit that was never dreamed of.

She starred in King Arthur and Love Actually, both fairly well reviewed movies, all before the tender age of 20.

Although she was young in beginning her career, she did not have the stage parents that most of young Hollywood has today. Her sense of determination and motivation all came from within her, beginning at the ripe age of three years old.

She was named Kiera Knightly on the 22nd of March, 1985. Although her name was to become Keira so it could be pronounced easier on a world wide basis. She grew up in a performing household, both her parents having dabbled in TV and Broadway acting.

Although her parents didn't push her to the stage, she got bitten by the acting bug because of them. She would see them getting calls from their agents, and at a very young age, demanded one of her own. Of course, with no experience and being so young, she was refused at first.

But after several years of begging, her mother struck her a deal saying that if she concentrated harder on her studies, she would give Knightley proper representation. It is a fact that Knightley needed extra time and attention because she was diagnosed with dyslexia.

As she continued her schooling, she got offered small parts on stage plays, and other minor roles, but continued pursuing her career, knowing one day that she would be successful.

She starred in the Disney Classic, Princess of Thieves, and after that was widely acclaimed, her career skyrocketed with offers coming in thick and fast.

Currently, she has a large list of movies on her resume, some of the greater hits being Dr. Zhivago, and Pride & Prejudice, which was another movie that had unprecedented success, especially in the states.

This year, we can catch Knightly in the movie adaptation called Atonement, directed by her Pride & Prejudice helmsman Joe Wright. This concerned a gathering at a country manor in 1935 where Knightly would play the educated elder daughter of a nouveau riche family who's worried about her increasingly awkward relationship with the son of the family's cleaning lady.

Disaster strikes as her younger sister tells a destructive lie, bonds are shattered and eventually war intervenes, the film dramatically exploring the power of truth, lies, and memory.

Next year she is expected to be in two new movies, The Edge of Love and The Duchess.

This young London actress has gained much success already, and still to this date, under the age of 21.
