Dec. 1, Pleasantville- The Penman of Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) came into the Goldstein Fitness Center looking for a win over Pace, but failed to do so as the Setters attacked the Penman to get an 85-72 win.
Even though the Setters won by almost 15 points, things weren't looking up at the beginning of the game.
"When the game first started I was nervous. I'm not going to lie. Once we settled in towards the end, I knew we had it because we didn't turnover the ball as much," said Pace's senior guard Gibraltar White.
Pace gained possession on the opening tip but it was SNHU that would score the first points. In fact, the Penmen would go on to score eight points before the Setters would get on the scoreboard.
The Setters' drought would go on for almost five minutes when senior forward Desmond Quincy-Jones made a three pointer right down the middle to bring their deficit to five.
With a tightened lead the Penman weren't ready to give up their lead just yet, as they continued to rally they brought the score to 16-7.
Now dealing with a nine point deficit, Pace's junior forward Jon Jones came off the bench and made a jumper that not only brought the score to 16-9, but also pumped up the crowd.
With Pace still trailing by three, about midway through the first half sophomore guard Laurence McGhee made a shot form beyond the arc that tied up the game at 17.
With 5:40 left in the first half and the game being tied at 22, Quincy-Jones would launch a jumper that would give the Setters a 24-22 lead. This shot also led 14-7 point run that would end the first half.
After struggling for the majority of the first half, the Setters ended the first half with a 36-29 lead. White led the Setters' offense, totaling nine points in the first part of the game. Penman senior center Sam Carey carried SNHU in the first half with 14 points.
Quincy -Jones was the first Setter to put points on the scoreboard in the first half, and he would be the first player to put up points in the second half, draining a shot from three point land just like he did earlier, extending the Setter's to ten.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the Setters were showing who the dominant team really was by downing five three pointers in 12 minutes. Pace's lead was extended even further when senior guard Ryan Williams made a lay up on a fast break.
As the Penmen tried to chip away at their deficit, the Setters would not allow it when Williams was able to steal the ball and made an impressive behind the back dribble and would top it all off with a pass to Jones who made a lay up.
SNHU didn't want to leave Pleasantville with a loss, so they continued to attack this defiant lead the Setters had.
Unfortunately for the Penmen, it was too late as the Setters' lead was too big to overcome as they pulled out with the 13 point win.
On the evening, White led Pace in scoring with 16 points and totaled two assists and two rebounds along the way.
McGhee totaled a game high of eight assists and also drained ten points to help out the cause.
Quincy-Jones and junior forward Randy Wilson were tied for the lead when it came to rebounding. Both players had six rebounds on the evening with Quincy-Jones scoring eleven and blocking two shots, while Wilson tallied eight points on the evening.
With the win the Setters improve their record to 3-3 overall on the season with a Northeast-10 (NE-10) conference record of 3-1. The Penmen on the other hand fall to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the NE-10.
