30 companies filled the Gottesman Room on Nov. 1, giving students several opportunities to pursue jobs and hone interviewing skills.
The first ever Dyson Career Day was hosted by Co-op and Career Services. The fair mostly included job areas in liberal arts, including communications, entertainment, human and social services, non-profit/government organizations, and pharmaceutical companies.
Kimberly Porter, a Co-op counselor at Co-op and Career services said she thought the event "went really well." She said the she was approached by one student who thanked her for the event, saying it was very helpful.
The purpose of the event, Porter said, was to give students "a chance to interface with all of the great companies."
In addition to companies, opportunities for further education after college were also represented with the American Institute for Foreign Study and Pace Law School.
Although the event featured careers in liberal arts, Porter said students of all majors could have benefited from attending by getting practice with interacting with job recruiters. She added that many of the companies were large enough to have opportunities for other majors in their other departments, such as information technology and finance.
Many students seemed to use the event to gain internship opportunities and network. They dressed professionally, shook recruiter's hands and seemed to be focused on selling themselves to the companies they were interested in. However, Porter said the event was "not at all" only directed towards upperclassmen.
Co-op and Career Services provide a timeline of things students should be doing, beginning their freshman year. Learning to interact with companies and how to market yourself, is something that Porter said should start freshman year.
'When you meet someone and learn to communicate, you don't want the first time to be when you get a job," Porter said. "You want to learn all four years."
Some of the companies at career day included A&E Television Networks, Random House, New York Life, Sirius Satellite Radio, Web MD, The Guiding Light and Westchester Magazine.
"It's always a challenge to get the hottest companies, but I think we pulled it off," Porter said.
