Oct. 13, Briarcliff- The Skyhawks of Stonehill started early and never looked back as they rose to a 2-0 victory over the Setters this past Sat. on soccer's Senior Day. The loss for the Setters ended a two-game winning streak.
It didn't take too long for the Skyhawks to take off. It only took three minutes into the game for Stonehill freshman Caitlin McEvily to make a thunderous shot that pinged off the top right goal post and into the net, giving the Skyhawks an early 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by freshman Kirstie St. Martin and was the third goal of the season for McEvily.
Stonehill was quiet for a while as they kept on making shots only to be blocked by Setters or saved by Setters' freshman goalie Alexa D'Agostino.
Even though the Setters did not score a goal in the first half, they did a good job containing the Skyhawks from expanding their close lead.
During the second half, they were able to make some noise and possibly gain some momentum when they kept the ball near the Stonehill goal.
In the game's fifty-ninth minute, Setters freshman Cynthia Mendoza made an amazing head shot out of nowhere, and was looking like a goal when the ball rolled passed a diving senior goalie Alex Eckhardt.
The Skyhawks were relentless and wouldn't let the Setters score this easily. It was then, that Stonehill junior Marissa Bramwell, who was waiting behind Eckhardt, booted Mendoza's head shot back toward the middle of the field.
Possibly nervous by what almost was, the Skyhawks knew they needed to put this game away. Early in the seventy-third minute they did just that, when senior Lauren Boyd kicked the ball past D'Agostino for the second goal of the game giving Stonehill a 2-0 lead. The goal by Boyd was unassisted and was her tenth goal of the season.
Pace was unable to recover from this goal, and as hard as they tried, they were unable to score the rest of the way, giving Northeast-10 (NE-10) conference rival Stonehill a 2-0 victory.
With the Setters loss, their record falls to 4-9-2 overall with a 1-8-2 record in the NE-10 conference. With the win, the Skyhawks have improved their record 7-4-2 overall with a NE-10 conference record of 7-2-2.
On the day, the Setters were able to fire off six shots with only one of those shots on target for the goal. The Skyhawks meanwhile were able to attempt 20 shots with eight of them being on target. Even though the game was over, it was far from it for the senior captain of the Setters soccer team, Kimberly Ludewig.
Being the only senior on the team, Senior Day was more like Ludewig Day. After the game, Ludewig was honored for her accomplishments at Pace by being presented with flowers and a plaque. An emotional Ludewig expressed how she felt about Senior Day, saying "It's kind of bitter sweet. I'm glad we played well, even though we didn't get the result we wanted."
Over her four years at Pace, Ludewig entered the game on Sat. being ranked eighth on Pace's all time list for points, seventh all time in goals, fourth in assists, ninth in career games played, and sixth in career games started.
Pace's next and final home game of the season can be seen Wed. Oct. 17 in Briarcliff against NE-10 conference school Assumption.
