Jonathan Quartuccio ¬- Jess, I am staring at you in utter disbelief. You are now the second straight featured athlete for The Paw Print who is injured. How did this happen?
Jessica Conte - Well this past Sunday, the cheerleading team had an intense four hour stunting practice and we were practicing this new pyramid stunt. I just fell out and I dislocated my knee. I am now out two to three weeks.
JQ - When first asked whether or not you wanted to be part of the "Setter Stage" this week, you were a little hesitant. Why is this?
JC - I am just a shy girl and I didn't want a whole article dedicated to me.
JQ - I have noticed that you sometimes take naps late at night rather than just falling asleep until the morning. Doesn't this practice seem a bit odd?
JC - Everyone always asks why I do this. I'll sometimes wake up at 10 p.m. and get some homework done while my roommates are asleep. I get distracted if I try doing my work during the day.
JQ - What was your first job?
JC - I worked at my Aunt's Italian restaurant for two years answering phones and working the take out counter.
JQ - Lately I have noticed that potato chip portions in bags of chips have gotten fewer and fewer. The other day I opened up an individual size bag of chips and I got 5 /12 chips. What's the deal with that?
JC - I think it is done to control obesity.
JQ - As a bitter Met fan, I have never been as miserable as I was last week. When was the last time you were upset for an extended period of time?
JC - I was really upset last May when my dog got cancer and we had to operate on her.
JQ - Who do you like in the playoffs?
JC - I don't watch much sports but I am a Yankee fan. I'm hoping they advance.
JQ - What is the most annoying thing someone can do in life?
JC - Force someone to be interviewed.
JQ - And what do you do to annoy people?
JC - I don't think I have any annoying habits.
JQ - Yeah, I am sure that is the case. Rate these three items that concern you the most in life: Global warming, life after death, and whether or not you opt to put caramel on your next ice cream sundae.
JC - The after-life, global warming, and then the caramel one. If it were rainbow sprinkles, then global warming might be pushed to number three.
JQ - Now, I personally have never cried during a movie. The closest I came was when the little boy in Stepmom asked Susan Sarandon's character who will be tying his shoe laces after she's gone or when Kevin Costner's character asks his dead father to have a catch with him in The Field of Dreams. Having said all that, what movie(s) have you cried to?
JC - Bambi and Meet Joe Black.
JQ - Would you rather eat a bowl of your favorite ice cream using a used toilet brush as your spoon or run around Pace during common hour completely naked singing MC Hammer's hit song "2 Legit 2 Quit"?
JC - I would probably go with running around naked even though I have a fear of public nudity. I couldn't do the whole toilet brush thing.
JQ - Is there any scene more dramatic or compelling than the scene from Saved by the Bell when Jesse Spano was taking pills to keep her up and Zack Morris yells at Jesse and says she can't sing tonight, and then Jesse starts singing, "I'm so excited, I'm so excited. I'm so…scared."
JC - I know that scene and I definitely think that it is a very compelling scene. Nothing beats scenes from Saved by the Bell.
JQ - What is the best thing about being a cheerleader at Pace University?
JC - The girls are probably the best part. Our goal is to start competing. Once that happens I will be even more excited. I really enjoy seeing our routines come together.
JQ - What is the most complicated move you do in cheerleading?
JC - The hardest stunt that I attempted and failed in was the double down. The double down is when you twist twice in the air and come down cleanly. I got hurt my freshman year performing this move and I was hospitalized for six hours.
JQ - When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to be a California Raisin. They were always so hip with their singing and dancing. What did you inspire to be when you were a kid?
JC - I always wanted to be a veterinarian and I ended up majoring in accounting. I thought I could talk to animals when I was younger. I spoke to birds when I was younger.
JQ - Do you think anyone has really been hungry enough to eat a horse, and if so, how would you go about eating one? Don't you think the skin looks pretty tough? I mean I don't think a horse would be very enjoyable.
JC - I think I have been hungry enough to eat a horse. I would probably just bite into it; I would start with the thigh first.
JQ - What sport do you enjoy cheering for the most?
JC - I always loved cheering for basketball because I actually understand the game.
JQ - Jess this has been great. I hope you can nurse yourself back from this injury.
