Soccer

Oct. 6, Briarcliff/Pleasantville- The Setters took on two of conference rival Bentley's sports teams for University Fest. The first sports event of the day was soccer. This game between the Setters and the Falcons was a nail bitter down the last minute.

The Falcons did not wait too long in the first half to come swooping down for their first goal. Sophomore Cheryl Boyd being assisted by junior Laura Siever scored the game's first goal in the middle of the fourteenth minute giving Bentley a 1-0 lead.

After the early Falcons goal, eight shots were fired off by both teams, but neither team would make any noise for the remainder of the first half.

With the second half underway, the Setters were ready to get some revenge for that early Falcons goal. In the forty-ninth minute of the match, senior and captain Kimberly Ludewig would help out the Setters' cause by striking in a goal, evening up the score 1-1. Ludewig's goal was assisted by junior Katelyn Breault.

Shots were made by both teams all over the place and it seemed that for a while neither team was going to score another goal in regulation time.

That is until early in the ninetieth and final minute, Breault made a goal for the Setters which would seal the win on University Fest. The Breault goal was unassisted and the Setters held on for the 2-1 win over Bentley.

The Falcons totaled 15 shots with ten of those shots being on target. Meanwhile, the Setters totaled 13 shots for the game with six of those shots on target for the goal. Junior Tiffany Robinson led the Setters with four shots and two shots on target.

Even with the early Bentley goal, that is the only mistake that Setters freshman goalie Alexa D'Agostino would make as she would go the entire game making nine saves along the way.

The win over Bentley improves the Setters' record to 3-8-2 overall and gives them their first conference win with a 1-7-2 record in the Northeast-10 (NE-10) conference. The Falcons fall to 7-6-1 overall with an NE-1o conference record of 4-5-1.

The next time the Setters soccer can be seen at home is this coming Sat, Oct. 13, in Briarcliff at 3:30 p.m. against conference opponent Stonehill.

Football

The action between Pace and Bentley was only beginning as the schools also faced off for University Fest's football game.

Just like their soccer team, the Bentley football team got off to an early start. On their first drive, the Falcons stormed down the field getting five first downs along the way. This effort eventually led to a touchdown pass from junior John White to senior wide receiver Jon Kaczka.

The Falcons would not stop there in the first quarter. After Setters sophomore quarterback Ray Gregg was intercepted by junior defensive back Nate Burdick, who returned that interception for 21 yards. This interception led to a Falcons field goal by sophomore kicker Tyler McNamara late in the first quarter, giving Bentley a 10-0 lead.

With things looking down for Pace at the end of the first quarter, the Setters were looking to come back growling in the second quarter.

Only three minutes into the second quarter, Pace sophomore running back Justin Polanis rushed four yards for a touchdown. The touchdown by Polanis was his fourth of the season. Unfortunately, the extra point by sophomore Josh Trumper was blocked, giving the Falcons the lead 10-6.

Soon after the Setters touchdown, the Falcons flew right back up the field when Trumper's 59 yard kickoff was returned 89 by senior defensive back Paul Tetzel for a touchdown, giving Bentley a 17-6 lead which lasted until halftime.

With the third quarter underway, the Falcons would just not stop striking. On Pace's three yard line, White was about to throw another touchdown for Bentley when junior linebacker Brian Schuster intercepted the ball, giving the Setters some hope.

This window of opportunity for the Setters was quickly shut when sophomore running back Nathaniel Ford was taken down by Falcons sophomore defensive lineman Darryl LaForest for a safety, which pumped up Bentley's already big lead to 19-6.

The Falcons were not done as they neared the six minute mark in the third quarter. White completed a 24 yard touchdown pass to junior John Studley. Extending Bentley's lead once again with a 25-6 score, which was ultimately the final score.

On the afternoon for University Fest Setters quarterback Gregg had five completions for 42 yards with one interception. Running back Polanis led the team with 17 yards on 12 attempts with one touchdown, and junior wide receiver Jeremy Ducos led the Setters' receivers with two receptions for 21 yards.

With the loss, Pace's record goes to 1-5 overall with a 1-4 record in the NE-10 conference. The next time the Setters play in Pleasantville, they will face off against conference opponent American International on Sat. Oct. 20 at noon.
