Last Wed. the new hit series Gossip Girl finally made its highly anticipated debut. Some have been calling it the Sex and the City for the younger generation that is bound to be an undeniable success.
The show follows the story and unavoidable drama of six wealthy Upper East Side teenagers. It stars Blake Lively who portrays Serena Van Der Woodsen, the mysterious popular girl who everyone loves to hate.
Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), Serena's on- again, off- again best friend with an attitude as large as her wallet, but under the surface is harboring some deep insecurities.
Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), Blair's longtime boyfriend, still seems to be holding a flame for Serena.
Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), the epitome of Upper East Side sleaze with an über-alpha male complex.
In contrast, there is the quirky but passionate Dan Humphrey and his desperate but sweet younger sister Jenny. They are middle class, but "poor" compared to the standards of most boarding school students.
Gossip Girl herself is voiced by Kristen Bell, who can be counted on to break the latest scandal going on in these teenagers' lives, and spread it life wildfire.
The pilot starts out with Serena making her unannounced return to the city. She arrives in the midst of her old best friend Blair's extravagant family party. During Serena's arrival, Blair was sequestered in her bedroom with her boyfriend Nate planning to "seal the deal" for the first time ever.
Nate, who is reluctant to go all the way with his pretty girlfriend, hears of Serena's presence at the party and nonchalantly jumps at the chance to greet her. Blair, who feels rejected puts on a façade, goes out and coolly greets her old best friend.
The next day, Chuck taunts Nate about saying how hot Serena looked and reminds him how they secretly hooked up before Serena's mysterious departure, all under the nose of Blair.
Meanwhile at the Humphreys, we meet the washed up rock star father of Dan and Jenny who is holding a concert for the best forgotten bands of the 90's.
While Jenny tries to break into the realm of popularity by going to Blair's "Kiss on the Lips" party, Dan finds himself quietly scheming to get a glimpse at Serena.
Serena finds that her good old friend Blair isn't going to invite her to that same party, she instead pushes Blair into meeting her for some underage drinking to talk about their issues
Blair and Serena seem to make up after Serena apologizes for disappearing and not informing Blair of her plans. All seems okay in girl world, for now.
After Chuck tries unsuccessfully to lure Serena into his "good graces" she conveniently bumps into Dan and accepts a date with him despite the displeasure of her mother.
Blair tries once again to "seal the deal" with Nate, but plans are halted once Nate tells Blair of his not so clean past with Serena. Nate sees it as a way out of their relationship, while Blair is devastated by the fact that she did not know that this happened.
Nate's father hears of the breakup and pushes Nate to fix things because he wants security in his business deal with Blair's family. Nate half-heartedly crawls back to Blair who forgives him, but ensuring that he can no longer contact Serena in any way.
That night, Serena makes an abrupt appearance at Blair's party after Dan gets an emergency text from his little sister who was that the party in question. They find her being manhandled by Chuck, who then gets punched out by a protective and angry Dan.
Serena's appearance at the party does not go unnoticed by Blair, who communicates with her eyes that she knows what went down with Nate. Serena ends up leaving the party upset, but comfortable in the presence of Dan.
Then we see Nate, who is obviously still confused about the way he wants to live his life, and the path his father is forcing him to take.
Drama, drama, and more drama, surrounded by drugs, expensive cars, limo rides and shallow lifestyles. Notably dubbed the "EC," (East Coast) this new wave show is living up to the expectations of many viewers. Mystery, scandal, and all out arguments ensue, and make many wonder how this show will pan out in the end.
