"The love of money is the root of all evil," is the bold opening line to the new TV show Dirty Sexy Money, "money makes everything go wrong."
The show begins off by introducing us to Nick George, played by Peter Krause, whose father had the all-consuming job of being personal attorney to the Darlings, the wealthiest family in New York. Nick's dad was such a workaholic that Nick's mother couldn't stand it and left, thereby depriving little Nick of a close relationship with either parent.
We go from seeing this to Nick's father's funeral in which he can't even enter. Nick tells the police officer it's his father's funeral and the cop says, "it's everyone's father's funeral." Nick only gets in when the people he most despises, the Darlings, make the very glamorous appearance and recruit him in. Nick's wife, Lisa George played by Zoe McLellan, asks Nick to promise that they never have to see those people again, and Nick quickly agrees.
With that promise, who would have thought of what was to come. With a settlement of ten million dollars, Nick was bought from the Darling's, making Nick exactly like his father, a slave to the family.
The Darling's are a typical rich family. The head of the household, Tripp Darling played by Donald Sutherland, is the most powerful and persuasive character in the show. Darling's wife, Letitia Darling played by Jill Clayburgh always tries to keep things in control with the Darling family, when she's not drinking, that is.
Then there are the siblings. We'll start off with the oldest. Patrick Darling played by none other than William Baldwin, is the attorney general of New York but has a girlfriend who he can't afford to have around. Karen Darling, the eldest daughter, played by Natalie Zea is introduced to us in the beginning of the show as a little girl who "loves" Nick George. She's the socialite who runs the family foundation.
We move on to Brian Darling played by Glenn Fitzgerald, who works in the Episcopal Church and has hated Nick since they were kids. Juliet Darling, played by Samaire Armstrong, is an actress because of her wealth. When paparazis told her she was a bad actress, she defended herself by calling them poor. Her twin brother, Jeremy Darling played by Seth Gabel, is the one true character that we might actually feel sorry for. Always drunk, hung-over and dirty, Jeremy feels that he is the disappointment in the family and that his father despises him.
If it's true that we are fascinated by the lives of the very rich, then Dirty Sexy Money may be the cure. In this curious mix of "Dynasty" and "Arrested Development," just about the only thing the wealthy accomplish is keeping us from feeling inferior to them.
The show's concept is simple. Nick's father dies and so does the protection of the Darlings. Tripp Darling uses Nick to his advantage and offers him a deal he knows he cannot refuse. Just what does this deal entail?
Well adding a whole batch of new numbers to your phone book for starters and on top of it, having specific deathly hilarious ring tones for each one of the Darlings. What's the need for this? With Nick's new job, comes a lot of work. He is taken through everyone's problems to try to solve them because as you know, rich people don't know how to do anything themselves.
Juliet is a bad actress, but Nick is now getting paid to make her a good one. Patrick's ex-transgender girlfriend won't leave him alone, and Nick has to make her disappear.
Nick is hired to keep the Darling's secrets from coming out and to keep the Darling's themselves the most powerful and envied people in the world.
"Power, privilege and family money are a volatile cocktail thrust on an idealistic lawyer when he inherits the job of tending to the legal (and sometimes illegal) needs of the absurdly wealthy Darlings of New York City." ABC.com
The series premiered on Wednesday, September 26 on ABC at 10PM. It premiered right after the horrible premiere of Private Practice. I was glad to have bumped into this right after the other premiere because this made up for everything the other show lacked. It's a soap opera about a rich family who in real life, we always despise. Here we are watching this good guy become the Darling's slave for ten million dollars, and we are eating it all up.
The bad lines and plots all add up to a good concept. When you have so many bad things, something good is bound to come out of it and that is just the case with this show.
We are comparing the lives of these people to our own and feeling so much better about ourselves because we don't have those problems. But just like it was said in the beginning of the show, the love of money is the root of all evil. Now that Nick is being paid ten million dollars, we shall find out if his opening words are indeed true.
Dirty Sexy Money is one of those shows you have to watch at least once. Give it a try, you might get addicted.
