Sept. 19, Briarcliff- Even though, the Setters put on some late game heroics with a goal, it was not enough to tighten the deficit as the Le Moyne Dolphins went on to beat the Setters 4-1 in a Northeast-10 (NE-10) conference game last Wednesday.
The Setters got off to a slow start allowing Dolphins player Kaitlyn Brown to score the game's first goal late in the third minute with an assist from teammate Jocelyn Jankowski.
With a 1-0 lead under their belts, the Dolphins went looking for more. However, the Setters would not let that happen easily as the teams went the next 33 minutes without making much noise.
The silence was deafening until the Dolphins struck again late in the thirty-sixth minute with another goal coming from Riane Fletcher (unassisted), giving Le Moyne a 2-0 lead that carried the Dolphins into the second half.
Just as the first half was coming to a bleak end it looked as if the Setters were going to come alive, when junior Tiffany Robinson made a booming shot towards the goal. Unfortunately, the shot was saved by the mere finger tips of Le Moyne goalie, Amanda Abbatiello.
In the second half it did not take Le Moyne long to extend their lead once again, as in the sixtieth minute Dolphin Caitlin O'Rourke (unassisted) scored a third goal for Le Moyne giving them a commanding 3-0 lead.
After this goal it seemed like the Setters gained a burst of energy. Although they had played hard the entire game it now seemed as if they were playing with a greater sense of urgency.
The Setters only had six shots in the first 67 minutes of the game but fired off eight shots in the last 23 minutes of the game.
Setters captain senior Kimberly Ludewig would not let Pace leave this game silent and empty handed as she punched in the Setters' first and only goal in the eighty-seventh minute of the game. The goal was also Ludewig's first of the season and was unassisted.
Celebration of Ludewig's goal was not a long one as 26 seconds later, still in the eighty-seventh minute, the Dolphins' forward, Fletcher, would put the game completely out of reach with the fourth and final goal for the Dolphins as they pulled out the 4-1 victory. The last goal was the second goal for Fletcher in the game and was unassisted.
After the game junior Amy Rinehart was asked on how she felt about the loss. She stated that, "It's always disappointing to lose at home. We just got to keep going from the first whistle to the last."
The loss for the Setters brings their record to 2-5-2 overall and they remain searching for a win in the NE-10 with a 0-4-2 conference record. Meanwhile, the Dolphins improve their overall record to 6-2 and their conference record to 3-2.
The next time Setters soccer can be seen at home is next Weds. Oct fourth at four p.m. in a non-conference game against Holy Family. They can also be seen on Sat. Oct. sixth at 10 a.m. against conference rival Bentley as part of University Fest. Both games will be held at Pace Field in Briarcliff.
