Pace University officials announced that resident students who have not received immunization from Measels Mumps and Rubella (MMR) and Meningococcal Meningites will be forced to vacate their dorms on Oct. 4.
The vaccinations for such diseases is a New York State Law, and is being strictly enforced after the recent death of a Penn State student who had acquired Meningococcal Menningitis.
The student, Anne Ryan, was hospitalized on Sat, Sept 8 for the illness, and died early Sunday morning.
The state of Pennsylvania has the same legal requirements of vaccination as New York, but the University itself allowed students to waive the vaccination if they had medical problems or if it did not comply with their religious beliefs.
Pace will not be offering a waiver, and is serious about the immunization. The Office of Student Assistance (OSA), posted on their webpage that "students will not be allowed to register or attend classes unless they submit a completed Immunization Requirement Form." The form can be downloaded from pace.edu/osa.
