Running from 1984, the 23rd annual MTV's Video Music Awards kicked off Sunday, September 9, with a "comeback" of sorts.
Britney Spears, performing for the first time on the Video Music Awards since her controversial kiss with Madonna in 2003, performed her new single "Gimme More". Although it was one of the more anticipated performances of the night, it did not deliver.
Britney's choreography was the usual, women and men dressed in revealing clothing, dancing as if they were in a Las Vegas strip club as opposed to the Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas, where the Video Music Awards were held. The one thing that was not "normal" for Britney's shows was her choreography. In comparison to Britney's other dancers, Britney's performance seemed dull, unentertaining, and made it seem like Britney also had no idea what was going on. She may have made her "comeback", but her lackluster performance have others questioning whether or not she should have stayed away.
However, the night was not without its glories. One of the more impressive performances in the VMA's recent years, Chris Brown performed with a collection of songs, including "Umbrella", "Kiss Kiss", "Wall to Wall", and "Billie Jean". Chris Brown despite his age proved to many people that he has become one of the best dancers in decades.
Other performances included Cobra Starship with special guest William Beckett (frontman for The Academy Is…), Linkin Park, Alicia Keys, Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, Kanye West, as well as many more.
One of the more humorous events of the night was the discrepancy between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee. During Alicia Keys' performance, there were words thrown between these two rockers.
According to witnesses, it was unclear what Lee said to Rock, but it lead to violence when the Detroit bad boy slapped Lee. Lee attempted to strike Rock, but not before getting punched in the face. At this time, security guards flooded the scene, escorting both rock artists out of the casino.
It is suspected that the fight started over their love triangle with former Baywatch star, Pamela Anderson. Lee had been whistling and screaming for Anderson when she was presenting an award during the ceremony. Rock was later presented with a summons to appear in a Las Vegas court; the date of the trial is unknown.
What would a VMA's show be without the presentation of Moonmen™? Justin Timberlake walked away with 2 Moonmen™ for Male Artist of the Year and Quadruple Threat of the Year. His videos for "My Love" and "What Goes Around…Comes Around" also won awards throughout the night.
Justin wasn't the only person to walk away with more than one Moonmanâ„¢ that night. Rihanna won both "Video of the Year" as well as "Monster Single of the Year" for her song "Umbrella" featuring Jay-Z.
Fergie, Beyonce, Shakira, Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes, and Gnarls Barkley also walked away with one Moonmanâ„¢ each.
Overall, MTV's Video Music Awards was a success. Great performances, hilarious comedy, as well as enjoyable music is always a combination for success. With the exception of Vegas brawls and a lackluster opening, this year's VMA's went off without a hitch. Hopefully, MTV's annual tradition of great performances, controversy, and entertainment will be a long standing one.
