The God of War returns, showing no mercy in the second installment of this series.

God of War 2, the sequel to the hit game God of War for Play Station 2 (PS2) provides the same violent fun that its predecessor had and provides a fitting end to the PS2.

The game starts shortly after where the first game left off. In the first God of War, Kratos, an ex-Spartan, went on a quest to get his revenge against Ares, the Greek God of War, with the help of various other Greek gods. Kratos succeeded in his quest and ended up killing Ares, becoming the new God of War.

Now, in God of War 2, for some reason Kratos ends up losing his powers to Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Zeus, head of the gods.

From what I could tell it had something to do with the Spartans (whom Kratos favored) destroying too many Greek cities. After he loses all his godly powers he is stabbed through the stomach by Zeus and dies.

With a little prompting from the Titan, Gaia, Kratos is able to climb out of the underworld and decides to travel to the island where the sisters of Fate reside, in an effort to stop Zeus from killing him.

From this point, there is almost no story whatsoever until the very end, which gets pretty complicated thanks to time travel. There are occasional run-ins with famous Greek heroes, but they are ultimately irrelevant to the overarching story, since they serve as bosses that get in the way of Kratos' goal. This is why the fun of the game is in the gameplay, not the story.

The gameplay has not changed since the last game. The majority of the game consists of Kratos running through levels fighting wave after wave of enemies and solving various puzzles. Fighting consists of pressing different button combinations. Different combinations do different attacks, with some attacks possibly doing more damage than others.

Kratos has new sub weapons to fight with, a mallet and a spear, which he can use instead of his normal blades. He also has a couple of new special attacks, such as the ability to create earthquakes and a bow and arrow set, to defeat his enemies.

All these attacks can be upgraded by collecting the numerous red orbs that are found in chests and dropped by killed enemies. Kratos still has his trademark way of finishing off enemies in a violent fashion by pressing a timed sequence of buttons that is sure to give the player an adrenaline rush.
